We’re happy to let you know that designs for outdoor community spaces at the future Hornsby Bend Health & Wellness Center have been finalized and approved. Based on what we heard from the community, we've included some exciting outdoor amenities, such as:

Inclusive playground - The Hornsby Bend Health & Wellness Center’s playground is designed so that children of all abilities can play together.

Inclusive play helps kids develop important understanding and social skills, which can help them develop into happy and healthy adults. You can learn more about our playground supplier, WeBuildFun, at their website WeBuildFun.com.

Inclusive elements include a “whirl," similar to a traditional merry-go-round, but is level with the ground and accommodating of two wheelchairs with an additional seat for a caregiver. The design also includes musical instruments that can be used by all children. The traditional playground equipment such as forts and slides will be connected by accessible ramps for kids of all abilities.

Click here to preview the playground.

Outdoor adult fitness area - Members of the community and the Hornsby Bend Health & Wellness Advisory Committee chose the winning fitness circuit design. A circuit is a back-to-back series of exercises with short breaks moving from station to station. This can burn a lot of calories quickly and engage the cardiovascular system.

Trekfit, a leader in recreational and fitness design, will install circuit equipment that’s designed to blend in with natural and urban settings. The circuit will allow users to customize their workouts to their fitness level, with clear instructions at each station for warm-up, workout, and stretching phases.

Click here to preview the fitness area.

Nature trail - A half-mile nature trail was added after we heard from the community that there's a great need for safer walking routes in Hornsby Bend. This will be a great place to take a walk or get some exercise with your pet or family.

Click here to preview the trail.

    GOOD NEWS
Construction of the Central Health Hornsby Bend Health & Wellness Center is on track to finish by June and the center is still set to open this fall. We’ve come a long way since breaking ground in early 2022. The center will offer primary care, integrated behavioral health (via Telehealth), an accessible community gathering space, a community playscape, workout equipment, and a nature trail.
The exterior materials on the building are installed. The general contractor, IE2, is currently working on the interior finishes, like the flooring and ceiling tiles.

STAY TUNED: GRAND OPENING – FALL 2023
Join us for the grand opening of the Hornsby Bend Health and Wellness Center. Be one of the first to see our new clinical space, community gathering spaces, inclusive playground, outside adult fitness area, and nature trail. The celebration will also include a back-to-school event (backpacks, physicals, immunizations), a resource fair, and assistance from CommUnityCare for becoming a new patient or transferring services over. Thanks to YOUR feedback, students from Del Valle ISD are working on art pieces and a mural to be displayed throughout the center and will be showcased at the grand opening. Subscribe to this project page to receive grand opening updates.

    HOURS OF OPERATION: WELLNESS PROGRAMS
Currently, we are analyzing survey results to determine the hours of operation for wellness programs as well as the types of programs we should offer at the center – potentially in collaboration with partners. This will not affect the anticipated hours of operation of the clinic, which CommUnityCare will determine.

SOJOURNER ST. / SANDIFER ST. REOPENING
We apologize for the inconvenience the Sojourner St. / Sandifer St. closure has caused for the past months. We are projecting it to open in less than 2 weeks once the inspectors are done testing the new water line and hydrants that were installed.

The general contractor, IE2, started construction at the beginning of September. The concrete pour is scheduled for 2 a.m. on Friday, November 4. The reason for the early morning pour is that concrete naturally produces heat as it dries, so pouring the concrete before sunrise allows workers to level the mixture before it gets too hot outside. This will also help avoid dense traffic on Gilbert Rd. as the construction trucks enter and exit the site. Thank you for understanding if bright lights or loud noises occur during this concrete pour.

We know construction can be disruptive, so we are asking for your patience and understanding throughout the next nine months. We ask that you subscribe for text updates on the construction of the center and the impact to the neighborhood by texting “Hornsby Bend” to 833-382-2226 or "Hornsby Bend ESP" to 833-382-2226 for updates in Spanish.

Construction has begun on the Hornsby Bend Health & Wellness Center.

After completing the permitting process, construction began this week on the new health and wellness center in Hornsby Bend, 3700 Gilbert Road (across from Dailey Middle School). Substantial completion of the Hornsby Bend site is expected to be reached by the end of next summer. This facility, which broke ground last spring, is expected to open to patients by fall 2023.

The Hornsby Bend Health & Wellness Center will offer primary care, integrated behavioral health and oral health assessment, select specialty care via telehealth and an accessible community gathering space. About 21.4% of residents in the region are below 200% FPL, and have a higher rate of asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, and renal failure.

Central Health received a site development permit late Monday, August 15, 2022. The permit was initially submitted on June 18, 2021. At this time, the general contractor will take over the project to begin formal construction. The general contractor is reviewing and adjusting construction timelines. We will communicate any impacts to the opening of the center.

While the site development permit was under review, other work began to advance this project:

    • Identification and recording of easements with SouthWest Water Corporation
    • Posting of bond for Storm Water Protection Program with City of Austin
    • Mobilization by general contractor and installation of construction trailer
    • Planning for operational timelines and resources including staffing requirements included in the Fiscal Year 2023 budget
    • Advancement of an accessible playground for community use
    • Development of furniture, fixture, and equipment solicitation packages for both sites
